Having no hot water or heating can be a frustrating experience for anyone, usually because it only becomes apparent there’s a fault when you got to turn the heating on or use the hot tap.

When your boiler stops working, it’s crucial not to panic! There are a few things to check to see if there’s a temporary problem with the boiler or to determine if you need our help.

If you’re not comfortable looking at your boiler, or you need a boiler repair in Preston or Lancashire contact us on 07931 733 955 and we’ll be there to help as soon as we can.

Step 1. Check the Boiler Basics

Before we look at more complicated issues, check these things first. Often it’s one of these common issues that can easily be solved.

  • Power Supply: Make sure that your boiler is receiving power. If there are no lights or activity from the boiler check your fuse box to see if something has tripped.
  • Gas Supply: It sounds obvious, but confirm that the gas supply to the boiler is on. The gas valve should be in the open position. If you can access your gas meter, make sure it’s functioning correctly and that there are no issues with the gas supply. If you smell gas or suspect something has happened to the gas supply, you need to contact your supplier as soon as possible.
  • Water Supply: Check the water pressure gauge on the boiler; it should typically read between 1-2 bars. Low water pressure can cause the boiler to shut down.

Step 2. Reset the Boiler

If there doesn’t seem to be a problem with supply to the boiler then it’s time to turn it off and on again!

Most boilers have a reset button, usually located on the front panel. Press and hold the reset button for a few seconds. The boiler should attempt to restart. If it doesn’t, there may be an underlying issue that needs further investigation. Also, if it does restart and work temporarily and then shut down again, it needs to be looked at.

Call our team to arrange for us to visit and investigate the issue.

Step 3. Inspect for Error Codes

An advantage of modern boilers is that they often have a digital display that shows error codes when something goes wrong.

Your boiler’s manual will have more information on each code and possible solutions. Common codes can indicate issues such as low water pressure, ignition failure, or a problem with the thermostat.

If you do contact us to arrange a boiler repair be sure to have any error codes to hand along with the make and model of your boiler, it will give us an idea of the problem you’re having and get you back up and running as soon as possible.

If after this your boiler is still not working there are some seasonal fixes that might help!

Seasonal Step 4: Bleed Radiators

Air trapped in the radiators can cause problems with your heating system. If you’re having trouble at the start of autumn or winter it’s worth looking at your radiators to see if this is the problem To bleed the radiators, you’ll need a radiator key:

  • Turn off your heating system.
  • Insert the radiator key into the bleed valve, usually located at the top of the radiator.
  • Turn the key counter clockwise to open the valve. You should hear a hissing sound as air escapes.
  • Once water starts to flow steadily, close the valve by turning the key clockwise.
  • Check the boiler’s pressure gauge again and top up if necessary.

If you’re still having problems after this or you’re not confident you can investigate and sort the problem yourself, it’s time to call in the professionals at Gas Line.
